Introduction

Natural hazards pose many common geotechnical problems in Japan and Taiwan, resulting from large earthquakes and heavy rainfall during passages of typhoon. Being aware of those common interests, we had been recognizing with each other the importance of regularly exchanging knowledge and promoting technology in mitigating natural disasters. In this vein, the first joint workshop was organized on the geotechnical issues associated with earthquakes and heavy rainfall, and successfully held at National University of Taiwan in Taipei on November 2004. The second Japan-Taiwan Joint Workshop was held in Nagaoka, Niigata, Japan on 5/18-21, 2006. The third one was held in Keelung, Taiwan on 10/31-11/3, 2008.

The fourth one is now planning to be held in Sendai, Miyagi, Japan on 10/25-28 2010. The technical topics of this workshop will be geotechnical problems related to g Geotechnical Hazards from Large Earthquakes and Heavy Rainfallh. Participations of more than 70 researchers and practitioners from universities, consulting firms and general contractors from Japan and Taiwan are expected, and some participants from other countries are also greatly encouraged. The last day of the workshop will be devoted to visits to the sites devastated by 2008 Iwate-Miyagi Inland Earthquake, and the technical sessions will be organized on the first and third days of the workshop.

Theme

1.Case studies of structure damages and landslides induced by rainfall and earthquakes.
2.Recent investigation results on liquefaction soil behaviors and damage caused by
the earthquake including damages by soil liquefaction, active fault movements, and landslides

3. State of the art on evaluation and mitigation of liquefaction-related damage based on recent experiences earthquakes.
